Assisi is a beautiful town in Italy made famous all over the world by it's favourite son, St. Francis. It's main characteristic is it's medieval structure that has remained intact over the centuries. The town sits on the slopes of Mount Subasio along overlapping natural terraces. Outstanding architecture, convenient geographical position as well as its mild and dry climate make it an ideal pilgrimage destination all year long. The Basilica of St. Francis housing the tomb of St. Francis is a popular pilgrimage destination and tourist attraction. Following the devastating earthquakes of September 1998, the basilica has been fully restored. One of the many artistic highlights of the basilica are the frescoes by Giotto and other leading artists of the day. The city is also much more than just the home of St Francis. A stroll through the main square, Piazza del Comune, will give an idea of this central Italian town's rich history.
